Saturday’s Eagles injury report took 72 targets off the field. DeVonta Smith (41) and Dontayvion Wicks (31) are both ruled out for Monday night against Dallas, and together they account for 38.3 percent of the 188 targets Philadelphia has thrown through six games, per ESPN’s team stats. Saquon Barkley is listed as questionable after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury. The team’s report has him as a full participant in Saturday’s practice.
Jalen Hurts won’t be the one throwing to whoever’s left. CBS Sports reports he is presumed to miss the rest of the 2026 regular season with blood clots, so Tanner McKee makes his second start. The first, a 25-14 loss to Carolina, went 26 of 45 for 215 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions (NBC Sports Philadelphia). That’s 4.8 yards per attempt. Both teams come in at 2-4, and the Eagles have lost four straight (SI).
Week 6 shows how concentrated the passing game had become. Smith and Wicks drew 38.3 percent of the targets across the season but 42.9 percent against the Panthers, 18 of the Eagles’ 42 (FantasyData box score), and Smith got his 14 while playing only 42 of 64 snaps (PhillyVoice). Covers notes that Philadelphia passed on a league-high 78.7 percent of its plays that day. That leaves a pass-heavy offense with a backup quarterback and without its two most-targeted receivers.
The matchup helps a little. Through Week 6, Dallas is allowing 232.7 passing yards per game (23rd) and has given up 11 passing touchdowns, per Fox Sports. ESPN’s Week 7 preview, as cited by Athlon Sports, has the Cowboys last or tied for last in yards allowed per play (6.0) and takeaways (three). Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. carries no injury designation, though, after practicing in full Saturday (Yahoo). The Cowboys vs. Eagles line was Dallas -4.5 with a 44.5 total at DraftKings on Oct. 19 (SI), and Covers had the same numbers on Oct. 21. Both were posted before Saturday’s report.
I see four places the volume could go. None of them is a clean replacement.
Season: 29 targets, 18 catches, 127 yards (ESPN)
Lemon has the strongest claim, because he’s already on the field more than anyone else left. He played 52 of 64 snaps in Week 6 and ran a route on 47 of 52 dropbacks, the most of any Eagles receiver, per NBC Sports’ Rotoworld. FantasyLife has him at six or more targets in each of the last three games. Asked about the opportunity, the rookie said it was “next man up” (Inquirer; team site). That’s a player saying the expected thing rather than a coach revealing a plan. The snap and route numbers, though, already point the same way.
The catch: the targets haven’t turned into yards. Lemon is averaging 7.1 yards per catch, and he caught 3 of 6 for 19 yards against Carolina. If he becomes McKee’s first read, his target count should go up, but the yardage may not follow.
Season: 24 targets in four games (ESPN)
That works out to six targets per game, and he caught 6 of 8 for 61 yards in Week 6 while playing 52 snaps. Goedert sat out Thursday and Friday this week, then practiced in full Saturday and is listed without a designation, per the team’s report. CBS Sports’ RotoWire note names him as McKee’s likely go-to target. For a quarterback averaging 4.8 yards per attempt, a tight end in the middle of the field is an obvious outlet.
The catch: Dallas’s weak spot seems to be on the outside. FantasyLife puts the Cowboys in the top 10 for fantasy points and receiving yards allowed to wide receivers. A Goedert-heavy plan would keep the ball moving, but it might not test the part of this defense that has struggled most.
Season: Cooper 15 targets, 139 yards, four TDs; Brown one game, no targets (ESPN)
Smith and Wicks didn’t only take volume. They were also the deeper part of the offense: Wicks averaged 14.9 yards per catch and Smith 11.9. Cooper’s 17.4 (8 catches for 139 yards) is the closest thing left. His four touchdowns also lead the team in receiving scores, and he had room to play more after 39 snaps in Week 6. Brown practiced in full all week (team site), and CBS/RotoWire includes him with Lemon and Cooper as the top wideouts for Monday.
The catch: eight catches is a small sample to build a role on. ESPN shows Brown with one game played this season, so his role is a guess. Downfield throws also need time, and McKee was sacked three times against Carolina.
Season: Barkley 7 targets in four games; Dameon Pierce 10 in two (ESPN)
Pierce has caught more passes than Barkley this season. He played 61 of 64 snaps in Week 6 and caught 4 of 5 targets for 15 yards (FantasyData). Behind him the room is thin. Newsweek reports Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are on injured reserve and Carson Steele was waived after injuring his shoulder against Carolina. That leaves Pierce as the only other healthy back it names on the active roster.
This option is a trade-off. Checkdowns soak up targets without gaining many yards: Pierce’s five targets produced 15. Barkley’s value is mostly on the ground, with 182 yards on 36 carries (5.1 per carry, ESPN), on a team that averages 3.7. If he’s active, the Eagles might run more and spread the ball less, which would shrink the target pool rather than redistribute it. If he isn’t, Week 6 is the closest reference: 45 attempts, 42 targets and 35 rushing yards from Pierce. Which of those Monday looks like depends on a decision the Eagles haven’t announced yet.
