NFL Undefeated Teams: Five Perfect Records, and the Week 4 Odds Have Two of Them Backwards

Five undefeated teams are left in the NFL, and the NFL Week 4 odds have already sorted them.

They sorted two of them wrong.

The 3-0 team playing at home is an underdog. The 3-0 team that ranks last in the league in total yards is laying 10.5 points.

That’s Las Vegas and Minnesota, and they’re the two records worth arguing about.

Buffalo, Kansas City and San Francisco fill out the unbeaten list, per CBS Sports. All five play Sunday, Oct. 4, and only one of Kansas City and Las Vegas can leave Allegiant Stadium at 4-0, because they’re playing each other.

CBS called it “a battle of unbeatens no one saw coming.”

The prices below are DraftKings numbers via CBS Sports, and they’re subject to change.

Are the Raiders for real at +184?

Las Vegas has nine takeaways, the most in the league. The Raiders have forced multiple turnovers in all three games, and their turnover differential sits at plus-five, which means they’ve given the ball away four times while taking it away nine.

Week 3 at New Orleans showed the whole act. The Saints converted 9 of 15 third downs, kept drives alive, and still coughed the ball up four times in the fourth quarter.

That’s a defense that lets the other team build the house and then walks off with the keys.

The offense isn’t just along for the ride. Kirk Cousins is tied for the league lead with nine touchdown passes, and Brock Bowers caught 10 balls for 116 yards in his season debut at New Orleans.

Andy Reid has noticed. His description of what the Raiders are playing:

“Aggressive football.”

And still the Raiders vs Chiefs odds make Kansas City a 4.5-point road favorite, with the moneyline at Chiefs -222 and Raiders +184. That -222 works out to about a 69 percent chance for Kansas City, before the sportsbook’s cut.

Plenty of people aren’t buying it. CBS ran its bold predictions under the headline “Raiders upset Chiefs.” Jordan Dajani’s headline went with “Chiefs struggle in Vegas.” Yahoo asked whether the Raiders can “pull off another upset to improve to 4-0.”

A home team with the league’s best turnover numbers, getting points.

The market has decided it’s a fluke. Nine takeaways say otherwise.

Are the Chiefs a trap at -4.5?

The record isn’t. The price is.

Kansas City is 3-0 too, and Travis Kelce has been described as “re-energized.” But Yahoo’s big question for the week is whether the Chiefs’ pass rush gets back to form, and the best it could offer was this:

“Las Vegas represents a potential get-right game for Kansas City’s defensive line.”

“Potential” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Laying 4.5 points on the road, against the league’s best ball hawks, with a pass rush still looking for itself, is asking a lot of a perfect record.

The total is 47.5. Kickoff is 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.

Is Minnesota’s 3-0 the real trap?

It is.

The Vikings are 3-0 and rank last in the NFL in total yards. Winning without moving the ball is a nice trick. It isn’t a plan.

Kyler Murray was blitzed 27 times on 37 pass attempts against Tampa Bay in Week 3. Justin Jefferson came out of that game with an ankle injury. Tight end Josh Oliver is out for the year.

Kevin Fielder calls Sunday a “quintessential trap game,” and his read on Murray is blunt.

“He’s just missing things down the field… there were explosive plays to be had.”

Yet the line is Vikings -10.5 over the Dolphins, the biggest spread on the unbeaten slate, with the moneyline at -637 against Miami’s +469.

The case for Minnesota is mostly Miami. The Dolphins are 0-3 and lost De’Von Achane to a torn ACL in Week 3. Their defense is ninth against the run. Throw on it, and it’s a different story: one of the worst pass defenses in the league.

So the soft spot is through the air, the exact place Murray has been missing things. CBS even has a bold prediction out for Murray to set a Vikings single-game record.

Ten and a half is still ten and a half.

The total sits at 38.5, the lowest of the four unbeaten games. Split the total and the spread and the market’s picture is roughly 24-14.

Twenty-four points, from the offense ranked last in yards.

Are the Bills the safest unbeaten on the board?

Buffalo is 3-0 and laying 6.5 points to New England, with the moneyline at Bills -324 and Patriots +258. The total is 48.5.

The Patriots haven’t given anyone much reason to argue. SportsLine called their 35-6 loss “ugly” and said “the post-Super Bowl hangover continued.”

A real record, against a team still nursing a headache, at a price that makes sense.

What is the market saying about the 49ers?

Not much.

San Francisco is 3-0 and only a 2.5-point favorite over Denver, the smallest number laid by any unbeaten team this week. The moneyline is 49ers -149 and Broncos +125. The total is 46.5.

Three wins, and less than a field goal of respect.

Five teams will wake up 3-0 on Sunday.

The one with the best case for staying that way is the one getting points.
