NFL Week 3 opening lines: three numbers I think are wrong

Green Bay are better than Atlanta. Buffalo are better than the Chargers. San Francisco are better than Arizona.

Fine.

I’m not here to fight the entire Week 3 board. Most of it looks perfectly sensible, which is another way of saying most of it is boring.

Three numbers aren’t.

One moved five or six points because of a hamstring. One turned a home team into an underdog after two weeks of football. And one is exactly the sort of bet people expect me to love.

I’m passing on that one.

Because a bet looking like a Maverick bet doesn’t make it value.

The prices below are timestamped for a reason. A price without a timestamp is a rumour.

The full Week 3 board

Week 3 runs Thursday 24 September to Monday 28 September 2026 (NFL.com schedule).

These will move. Check the number you’re actually being offered.

Ravens-Cowboys is at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, not in Dallas (NFL.com).

Minnesota opened around -1.5 at Tampa Bay and had reached -2.5 at DraftKings by Monday morning (CBS Sports). The TB -2.5 number floating around is a pre-Week-2 look-ahead. Wrong instrument. Ignore it.

Moneylines used below are from a later bet365 snapshot at 5:50 p.m. ET via Covers.

Eagles at Bears: how much is a hamstring worth?

Yes, Chicago scored three points on Sunday.

At home.

With Caleb Williams playing most of the game.

That’s a perfectly good reason not to want anything to do with the Bears.

Now explain the price.

Williams injured his hamstring in the fourth quarter. Ben Johnson called him week-to-week, said he’d likely miss some time and may not practise this week, although the MRI was described as “somewhat encouraging” (NFL.com; ABC7 Chicago).

The look-ahead had Chicago roughly -1.5 at home with a total around 48.5.

By Monday morning, Philadelphia were -4.5 and the total was 43.5.

That’s about six points on the spread and five on the total because of one player’s hamstring, eight days before kickoff.

Maybe that’s right.

But “week-to-week” and “definitely out” aren’t the same thing, and subsequent reporting has pointed towards a minor rather than major injury (SI).

Here’s what bothers me: the market has moved six points because of a quarterback whose team just scored three points with him.

Either the old number was too generous to Chicago or this one is too harsh.

The bet only has a path if Williams gets back on the field. If he’s practising in some form by Thursday, questionable by Friday and active Monday, we’re suddenly talking about a very different price.

And I mean if. Johnson’s comments lean the other way.

Chicago +155 at bet365 implies 39.2% before the vig. Philadelphia -185 implies 64.9%. Strip the margin proportionally and the Bears come out around 37.7%.

I make Chicago 41%: roughly a 60% chance Williams plays, with the Bears around 45% if he does and 35% if he doesn’t.

That’s only about three percentage points of edge.

Thin.

Earlier in the day, the number was better. The market has already started taking some of this back.

So I’m interested, but I’m not marrying it.

And if Williams is ruled out, the argument goes in the bin with the price.

Vikings at Buccaneers: 2-0 is doing a lot of work here

Minnesota are 2-0.

Tampa Bay are 0-2.

That’s the headline.

Now read the games.

Minnesota have scored 48 points this season. Thirty-nine came in Week 1 against Green Bay.

They scored nine in the entire game at Chicago.

Tampa’s two defeats? Six points at Cincinnati and four at home to Cleveland.

Two losses, yes. Two competitive losses.

The market has still turned Minnesota into a road favourite.

Part of that is obviously Kyler Murray. He has cleared concussion protocol and Kevin O’Connell has confirmed he’ll start in Tampa (Vikings.com; CBS Sports).

Murray is better than Carson Wentz.

No argument.

He’s also played eleven regular-season snaps in this offence and is coming back from a concussion.

That’s where I disagree with the price.

The market gets to upgrade Minnesota for the better quarterback. It doesn’t get to pretend the rest of the uncertainty disappeared.

New offence. Almost no live reps. Road game. Florida in September.

Price me in.

There’s a rival explanation for the move too. SI’s betting desk attributes it more to the Murray news than the teams’ records (SI).

Fair enough.

Either way, I think too much confidence has found its way into the Minnesota side of the number.

My first estimate on Tampa was 53%. Once Murray was confirmed, I cut that to 51%. The information changed, so my number changed.

At 5:50 p.m. ET, bet365 had Tampa +105 and Minnesota -125.

That puts Tampa at 48.8% before vig and roughly 46.8% after a proportional de-vig.

My 51% versus the market’s 46.8%.

Call it a four-point edge.

Not enormous. Enough.

And amusingly, Tampa shortened from +110 to +105 after Murray was confirmed.

I don’t have a clever explanation for that.

Sometimes the honest answer is that the market did something odd.

THE MAVERICK CARD

Game: Vikings @ Buccaneers, Sunday 27 September
Market odds: Tampa Bay +105
My rough probability: 51%
Market probability: 48.8% pre-vig / 46.8% de-vigged
Edge: About +4 percentage points
Why I think it’s mispriced: Minnesota’s record and Murray’s name are carrying too much weight. He has barely played in this offence.
Path: Tampa keep it close at home, as they have in both games so far, and win with the offence functioning better on the day.
Risk: High. Baker Mayfield can wreck the whole thing with turnovers.
Maverick rating: MISPRICED

Re-check the price.

It has already moved twice.

It might lose. Read the odds again.

Bengals at Steelers: this is where I stop

This should be my sort of bet.

Pittsburgh, at home, getting a price in a division game.

Lovely.

Except I can’t find the path.

The Steelers beat Atlanta 20-13 in Week 1 and then produced three points, 235 yards and 3.5 yards per play against New England.

Per CBS Sports, they’ve scored one offensive touchdown across 25 possessions.

That’s no longer one ugly afternoon.

It’s the beginning of a problem.

Yes, Pittsburgh’s defence gives them a chance. Yes, divisional games can get weird. Yes, Cincinnati being 2-0 probably helps compress the number.

None of that manufactures points.

At +155, Pittsburgh are about 37.7% after de-vigging. I make them 39%.

That’s not value. That’s rounding error.

Give me +180 and we’ll have another conversation.

At +155, I’d be paying for the idea of a contrarian bet rather than the bet itself.

Pass.

Kansas City -11.5: the consensus tax

Now for the number half the market wants to put in a parlay.

Kansas City -11.5 at Miami.

Chiefs 2-0. Dolphins 0-2. Biggest spread on the board.

Easy.

Which is exactly why I’m suspicious of it.

At the 5:50 p.m. ET bet365 snapshot, Kansas City were -750 and Miami +525. After removing the vig proportionally, you’re paying for Kansas City at roughly an 85% win probability.

Maybe that’s fair.

But they needed overtime against Indianapolis last week, and the spread has already gone from -10.5 to -11.5.

The obvious argument has been noticed.

You’re not discovering that Kansas City are better than Miami. Everybody knows.

You’re paying the consensus tax for the privilege of agreeing with them.

Likely isn’t the same thing as valuable.

Pass.

One last thing about movement

Don’t fall in love with a number you read six hours ago.

Chicago moved from +165 to +155 while I was working on this. Tampa went from +110 to +105. Philadelphia and Minnesota both moved hard early, came back towards the middle of the day and then shifted again.

And Carolina-Cleveland is sitting at different numbers depending on the book: CAR -2.5 / 40.5 at bet365 and CAR -3 / 41 at BetMGM on the same day.

Do I have a grand theory for every half-point?

No.

Sometimes two trading desks disagree.

That’s why you shop the line instead of inventing a story.

The favourite is usually obvious.

The price is the interesting part.
