The Breece Hall injury is the headline in New York this week, and it’s the smallest part of the story.
Hall won’t play Sunday at Chicago. Neither will three other offensive starters.
On Friday’s Jets injury report, per ESPN, the team ruled out running back Breece Hall (quadriceps), receiver Adonai Mitchell (finger), tight end Mason Taylor (thumb) and left guard Dylan Parham (knee). Hall and Parham were both hurt at Detroit. Mitchell and Taylor didn’t practice all week.
Yahoo’s headline puts the full count at five ruled out.
The lead back. A starting receiver. The starting tight end. The left guard.
That isn’t one hole in the lineup. It’s four, all on the same Sunday, all on the same side of the ball.
And it lands on a team that can’t afford a bad bounce. The Jets are 1-2 and have lost two straight, both late: in overtime to the Packers in Week 2, then 31-24 at Detroit, where the Lions scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:25 left.
Here’s what’s still standing.
Geno Smith, 36, has 783 passing yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions through three games, and his 75.5% completion rate leads the league. The one piece of this offense nobody has to replace is the quarterback.
Everything around him got shuffled.
At running back, Braelon Allen moves up. He has 19 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown this season, a shade over three yards a pop. Behind him is Isaiah Davis, a practice-squad call-up who hasn’t taken an offensive snap yet.
The ground game wasn’t exactly humming before Friday, either. The Jets ran for 125 yards in their last two games combined.
Up front, Jordan Meredith takes over at left guard. He came over from the Raiders in the preseason and has 20 career starts, which is a lot more than a warm body.
Outside, Isaiah Williams starts, and Sterling Shepard gets elevated from the practice squad for a second straight week.
At tight end, the replacement already has a highlight reel. Rookie Kenyon Sadiq caught seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown at Detroit last week.
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich isn’t changing the message.
“The best teams focus on the process, and that’s where we get the results.”
On Sunday, the process will have a few new names on the jerseys.
The Bears have their own patch job, and theirs is at the most important spot on the field.
Caleb Williams is out with a grade 2 right hamstring strain, suffered in Week 2 against the Vikings. Tyson Bagent has been taking first-team reps and sits No. 2 on the depth chart. Case Keenum, 38, is No. 3, and he’s the one who started last week while Bagent was in the concussion protocol.
All Keenum did was beat the Eagles 27-7.
Chicago still hasn’t named a starter. Ben Johnson kept it close to the vest.
“Yeah, we got three guys, and we’ll kind of … we’ll work through the week.”
NFL Network’s James Palmer says the Bears “seem to be leaning towards Bagent to start.” Whoever gets the job will have a head coach SportsLine rates highly: “You can’t tell me that Ben Johnson isn’t a top-10, if not higher, coach.”
Johnson and Jets coach Aaron Glenn both used to be coordinators in Detroit. Sunday they meet as head coaches running depleted offenses.
The Jets’ defense, at least, shows up close to whole. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is back from a groin injury, and 10 of the 11 defensive starters are expected to play. Defensive tackle David Onyemata is on injured reserve.
Now the number.
DraftKings, via CBS Sports, has the Bears -3 with a total of 43, and the moneyline at Bears -156, Jets +132. Yahoo lists Chicago -3.5 and a total of 42.5. So the spread has been quoted at 3 to 3.5, and the total at 42.5 to 43. Prices move, and they differ by book. Check your own.
Disclosure: Bounty Sports may earn a commission from sportsbooks named on this page. It does not change which numbers we quote or which side we argue.
The spread is the wrong place to measure four missing Jets starters.
Both teams walk in hurt. One is missing its lead back, a receiver, its tight end and a guard; the other is missing its starting quarterback. In a point spread, that kind of trouble on both sidelines largely cancels out.
In a total, it doesn’t cancel. It stacks.
A total only asks whether anybody can move the ball. For the Jets, that now runs through Smith and a supporting cast rebuilt this week, behind a running game that managed 125 yards in two weeks. For the Bears, it runs through a backup who hasn’t been officially named.
The case for points comes down to two things. Smith hasn’t thrown a pick all season, and the Bears just put up 27 with their third quarterback.
It isn’t enough.
Four Jets starters out on one side and an unnamed backup quarterback on the other add up to a grind. Neither offense is built to score much on Sunday.
The player props are where Friday’s news gets specific. Hall’s carries, Mitchell’s targets and Taylor’s catches don’t vanish. They land on Allen, Davis, Williams, Shepard and Sadiq. Any prop hung on those names deserves to be read against this week’s depth chart, not last month’s box scores.
Geno Smith has been close to perfect for three weeks. On Sunday, he does it with a cast that’s mostly new.
Braelon Allen, for one, sounds like a man who’s been waiting by the phone.
“It’s exciting to know there’s going to be a little more on my plate. I’ve been ready for this.”
